Azalea Park Steering Committee Debuts New Design, Sets Timeline for Community Approval

The Azalea Park Steering Committee debuted its winning design for proposed improvements to Azalea Park at the 2nd Annual GHCA Block Party on September 29. The improvement plan was designed by the Fairfax County Park Authority in conjunction with feedback from the Azalea Park Steering Committee and inspired by the results of a community survey distributed in May 2018.

The proposed plan features a new swing set structure with two bucket swings and two banana-style swings, a fenced in playground structure for children ages 2-5, a separate playground structure for children ages 5-12 including a rope climbing feature, an adult exercise station, two new picnic tables and one additional picnic table that is handicap accessible and on a cement pad. The plan also includes new benches and landscaping throughout to enhance the beauty of the park. The only item from the survey not included in the final design is a footbridge over the stream which would have required grading changes to the area surrounding the stream that were cost prohibitive.

Members of the Greater Hillwood community are invited to a more thorough presentation of the plan presented by the Fairfax County Park Authority on Wednesday, October 17 at 6:45 pm in the Kastle Building (6402 Arlington Blvd, Suite 1100).

A vote for the approval of the plan will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm in the Kastle Building Meeting Room. All members of the community are encouraged to attend the presentation on October 17th and the vote on October 30th.

A note on the final vote: priority consideration will be given to GHCA dues-paying members in good standing as of Tuesday, October 30, 2018. To pay your dues, please visit

If you are unable to attend the meeting on October 17 and have questions about the plan, please contact one of the members of the Azalea Park Steering Committee for more information.
